Danbury Library Goes Beyond Books

When many of us think of libraries we don't think of them as hi-tech places. But, did you know that you can check out a Wi-Fi compatible iPad from the Danbury Library? You can check out a Roku streaming media player too. We had no idea.

This is a great example of how libraries are helping people adapt to technology in this digital age. “I think our role is getting people familiar with the technology,” said Katharine Chung, Digital Services Librarian. She hopes library patrons soon become as comfortable with downloading an e-book as they are taking out a traditional book.

The iPads and Roku devices are available on a first come, first serve basis. “So far, it’s been really popular,” said Chung. In the near future, they hope to add a few iPads preloaded in Spanish to the collection. “Danbury is such a big community,” added Chung. “We are always working for how to include everyone.”

Each iPad comes loaded with apps chosen by the library staff. The preloaded apps include those for productivity like Microsoft Word, for creativity like iMovie, for fun like Angry Birds, as well as apps for downloading library material. Each Roku comes pre-loaded with the library's subscriptions to Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Vudu, as well as a number of other channels.

In order to borrow an iPad or Roku you must be 18 years old or older, be a permanent Danbury resident and have a Danbury Library card in good standing (that means a library card that is not blocked due to unpaid fines or lost material). You can check out an iPad or Roku for one week at a time.

All iPad and Roku checkouts and returns are done in the Danbury Library’s Technology Center from the time the library opens until one hour before the library closes. At the time of checkout, you will have to fill out an Electronic Device Agreement.

If you don’t already have a Danbury Library card, it seems like now is a great time to get one. Get all the details by stopping into the library at 170 Main Street or by giving them a call at 203-796-1607.
