About the Exhibit

In simplified. the complex visual nature of photography is manipulated into its basic, graphical elements. Each photograph, while varied in subject matter, is united by the interplay of positive and negative space.

Artist Statement

Thanks to the advent of social media sites like Instagram I have rediscovered my love of photography. I tend to be visual by nature and it feels only natural to capture the world around me and share it. I don’t set out to create artwork on any particular subject matter, but rather just snap away when the moment strikes. I’m just as easily inspired by the intricate details of backyard birds as I am the play of light and shadow on a city sidewalk. It’s this seemingly random collection of images that inspired my first exhibition series, simplified. I wanted to unite the random. I took full color photographs on a variety of subjects and turned them into high contrast black and white images. Without the visual distractions of color and fine detail, the images revealed clean, graphical shapes. They felt united in their simplicity.
