Ready. Set. Race.

This coming Sunday (August 17th) the streets of downtown Danbury will become a high-speed racecourse. It’s the first inaugural Danbury Audi Race 4 Scholars Criterium.

It's like NASCAR but for bicyclists.

You can cheer on the pro and amateur cyclists as they hit the streets. The course is a classic American style criterium aka “crit” with a 0.6-mile loop that is lapped over and over. The race will take riders from Main Street near Library Place to White Street, onto Delay Street, up Liberty Street and back onto Main Street.

The event is the brainchild of Duane Perkins, a Danbury city council member, passionate cyclist and president of the non-profit Wheelpassion. Proceeds from the event will benefit Wheelpassion educational programs and help promote youth cycling.

“This is the perfect platform to showcase what a bike friendly city Danbury is becoming,” said Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton.

In addition to the race, there will also be a kid’s race for fun, vendors and free bicycle classes for both youth and adults. “We are looking forward to a great inaugural event and for the criterium to become a summer fixture downtown,’ said Josh Weeks, dealer principal for Danbury Audi, the event’s presenting sponsor.

The race starts at 8:30am and the festivities will go all day. So bring the kids and come downtown for a fun-filled community event. I plan to be there – with my camera in hand.
