I think in my first article for the Tribuna I wrote about one of my favorite spots in Danbury – Tarrywile Park. There was photo showcasing it in all its green, summer glory. It’s easy to enjoy the parks and the outdoors in warm weather, but it’s also easy to overlook them when the colder months come around.
Just because it’s cold and there is snow on the ground doesn’t mean you can’t get outside and enjoy some activity. The parks don’t close just because it’s winter. Once the roads are clear, I say get out there.
There is still a lot to do at Tarrywile. You can sled down what was the old ski hill, cross country ski, do a little back country skiing in the woods (please be careful), snow-shoe, or go for a hike if the snow isn’t too deep.
Another fun place to go is Richter Park Golf Course. Go sledding down the main hill. The golf course is the perfect setting for cross country skiing with all its rolling hills.
A popular ice skating spot in town is Kenosia Park on the west side. Of course you can always ice skate any time of year inside at the Danbury Ice Arena. At the arena it costs $4 to rent skates, $8 for adult admission and $6 for child admission. To check out when they have public skate times, visit their website www.danburyice.com.
It’s great to hunker down in winter and hibernate. I do some of that too. But, the way I see it, nature is alive and well out there. Don’t be afraid to bundle up and check it out.
