Making Downtown Shine

If you haven’t driven through downtown after dark recently, this is the time of year to do it.

Every year Alicia and I do an annual “holiday lights” tour of Danbury. We get a cup of hot cocoa to-go and drive around the city. There are some amazing Christmas displays. In addition to all the residential wonders we always include Main Street in our ritual.

The white lights on the trees in the center island and the lampposts adorned with greens and colored lights just make our downtown sparkle. Of course, our favorite sight is the giant tree at the corner of Main and West. There’s just something about seeing all the decorations and twinkling lights that brings a big silly smile to our faces. It’s beautiful, fun and makes us feel like kids again.

Speaking of feeling like a kid again, this year’s First Night theme is Young at Heart. From 4 to 8pm on Dec. 31st the Hat City will be bustling with families and friends. This year there will be something like 30 events going on all over Citycenter for First Night including vaudeville acts at The Palace Danbury, arts and crafts, music, puppets, storytelling, ice sculpting, and workshops with the Danbury Whalers hockey team.

Admission is $10 and you can get your tickets online at www.firstnightdanbury.org or by visiting the CityCenter office at 187 Main Street Monday through Friday between 10am and 5pm.

Here’s to making the Hat City shine not just during the holidays but way into the New Year. Hope to see you downtown in 2014.
